You can Renew your Driver’s License at the Library!
Your driver’s license (or state identification card) can be renewed up to 180 days prior to expiration (unless turning 21), and you have 30 days after expiration to renew without having to retake the written and driving tests. When you turn 21, your driver’s license will not expire until one month after you turn 21 and cannot be renewed until your 21st birthday.
Renewals are available the first Tuesday of each month, from 1-7 pm. We are currently scheduling additional days due to the backlog created by COVID-19 closures earlier this spring; this will continue as long as demand warrants.
An appointment is necessary at this time. Please call the library at 925-7003 to schedule an appointment.
We only do renewals here. If you need to take either the written or driving test, please contact a local Driver’s License Station for information and an appointment. Also, if you are not a US citizen, we cannot renew here even if you already have a current SD driver's license; you must go to a Driver's License Station each time to renew.
For your appointment, you must bring 2 pieces of mail, less than 6 months old, with your name and current address. If you have a PO Box, one of the pieces can have this, but at least one of the pieces of mail must have your physical (street) address.
We do not need your Social Security card, but you will need to know your number in order to complete the application. Please bring your card if you don’t have your number memorized.
If you are renewing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), please let us know when making your appointment. These need to be scheduled prior to 4 pm. If your CDL requires a Medical Card, please have it with you for us to photocopy.
You will need to turn in your current license. You will receive a temporary paper license, and your new permanent license will be sent from the state within 3-4 weeks.
We can issue Learner’s Permits, as long as the applicant has passed an approved Driver’s Education course within the last 12 months. We will need the official stamped and dated document showing that the person has passed both the written and driving portions of the course. In addition to the 2 pieces of mail listed above (which can have the name of the parent accompanying the applicant if they are a minor), we will need a certified copy of the applicant’s birth certificate and their Social Security card. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 18 and will have to complete a section of the application.
The fee is $28 for a regular license and $33 for a CDL, for a 5 year renewal. We can also replace lost licenses for a $15 fee. We are NOT able to take credit/debit cards. If paying by check, please make payable to “City of Freeman”.
